Summary:
Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is a non-governmental institute based in Tanzania with a mission of developing and sustaining health research capable of generating new knowledge and relevant information for public health policy and action. IHI is one of the leading research outfits in Africa maintaining collaboration with several other research institutes in the world.
The IHI in collaboration with the Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health will conduct a study that evaluates the effectiveness of promoting early child development through Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Conditional Cash Transfers (CCT) among mothers in Ifakara, Tanzania. Therefore, the IHI seeks a qualified person to fill the post of Study Coordinator. The coordinator will be responsible for providing overall leadership in the management, conduct, and reporting of a collaborative implementation of the study.
Position: Study Coordinator (1)
Report to: Principal Investigator
Work station: Ifakara, Morogoro Region
Duties and Responsibilities:
Understands study aims, fundamental design and outcome measures; and how these are connected.
Participates in establishing field data collection procedures that ensure the highest possible quality collection of variables used as outcome measures.
Continually reviews and monitors staff performance with regard to the quality of data collected, maternal and child care, and adherence to regulations (both ethical and bureaucratic) that the investigators have formally committed themselves to uphold.
Schedules and chairs regular study meetings to discuss progress and problems with research assistants.
Reports any improper conduct among staff, violations of good patient care, and research ethics.
Attends core staff meetings.
Supervises, monitors and evaluates work of all study supervisors, giving required support and advice.
Compiles weekly and monthly reports on activities, client recruitment and follow-ups.
Participates in all training sessions of research staff.
Develops and maintains systems for monitoring intervention and follow-up activities according to the study protocol.
Liaises with the IHI Procurement Unit to ensure that clinics and field activities have timely access to resources and supplies.
Participates in planning future research protocols as necessary (e.g.) liaising with district officials, potential clinic sites, advise on design and logistics, interview for new staff, etc.)
Qualifications and experience:
Minimum requirement is a bachelor degree/advanced diploma in social science, public administration, or public health from any recognised institution.
At least 2-year working experience in implementation research with a research organisation.
Competencies
Strong supervisory and management skills in leading teams in the field.
Experience of working under pressure and meeting strict deadlines, without close supervision.
Ability to conduct meetings and liaise with community, government and other stakeholders.
Ability to prepare and write reports.
Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
Strong problem-solving skills.
Strong organisational skills.
Computer skills (Ms Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
Ability to communicate fluently in the English and Kiswahili languages.
