Program Officer

NATURE OF WORK:

The Program Officer will report directly to the Program Manager, and be an integral part of the development and implementation of the Program Team work plan and activities.  He/she is responsible for providing advocacy and technical support for the department in the areas of scaling up home gardening and increasing household dietary diversity.

Collaborate with: Tanzania Food & Nutrition Center (TFNC), Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW), US Agency for International Development (USAID), World Vegetable Center, Farm Radio
Loctions: Kiteto, Babati, Zanzibar

MAJOR TASKS AND ACTIVITIES:
Work with the project unit team to ensure effective program implementation. 
Assist the program team in writing donor reports and developing work plans.
Help plan, budget and run home garden trainings at the master trainer and at the beneficiary level. 
Make regular follow up to beneficiary households to support home garden activities.
Assist with data collection, analysis and dissemination of HKI-conducted surveys and assessments.
Plan and set up demonstration garden plots according to the project work plan.
Implement continuous field training and action learning for both seed and vegetable production including training on water management and participatory monitoring.
Conduct cooking shows and village sensitization activities to encourage growth and use of home garden varieties encouraged in the program.
Integrate vegetable and nutrition messaging at local health centers
Disseminate recipes through training events.
Coordinate with communication partners to integrate nutrition messaging into radio shows, village level forums, community field days and drama groups.
Represent the HKI Team in workshops and meetings.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

Degree in the field of nutrition or public health with at least 4-5 years experience.
Knowledge and experience with training beneficiaries on planting and maintaining home gardens to increase consumption of vegetables, including use of modern gardening techniques; water harvesting, and  biofortification an advantage.
Experience with seed preparation, agronomy, harvesting, nutrition education, marketing, and  food preservation.
Experience drafting professional documents, communications, reports and proposals is essential
Ability to work effectively with communities, government and NGO partners.
Excellent oral and written communication skills in both Kiswahili and English.
Ability to organize, run and manage funds for large workshops.
Willingness to travel for long periods of time outside of Dar es Salaam.
General PC proficiency and strong skills in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as the willingness and ability to learn MS Access and other software programs as necessary.
Able to work methodically, accurately and neatly.
A team player, friendly, supportive, adaptable and flexible.
