Tanzania Program (WCS-Tz)
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) saves wildlife and wild places worldwide through science, conservation action,education and inspiring people to value nature.
Due to programatic growth and development, the WCS-Tz Program is currently looking to appoint an Assistant Director. The primary responsibility will be to provide both technical and programmatic management support to the WCS-Tz field projects and the country program.
Background
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is an international conservation NGO headquartered in New York, working to save wildlife and wild lands, and to meet global conservation challenges in Africa, Asia, the Americas and the world's oceans. The Africa Program is the largest of WCS's field programs, and the Tanzania Program is one of the largest in Africa. WCS has been working in Tanzania for 50 years to help safeguard the nation's unique global heritage. More than 140 projects have been supported, encompassing training, research, monitoring, institutional support, education, and the gazettement and extension of National Parks and Nature Reserves. WCS still employs its strengths such as a focus on fieldwork, science, and community and government partnerships. But there are also new
challenges, such as those associated with climate change, wildlife trade and the protection of ecosystem services.

The WCS TzProgram employs 86 full-time Tanzanian and 6 expatriate staff, with regional offices in Arusha, lringa, Mbeya and Zanzibar. There are 5 main land/seascape programs (Southern Highlands, Tarangire Ecosystem, Ruaha-Katavi, Zanzibar Forests and Greater PembaChannel), and a range of further discrete projects nationwide.

Overview of main terms of reference:

Assist the WCS-Tz Country Director to maintain smooth and efficient overall Program management by serving as an operational line manager to Project Directors and to establish and to facilitate communication between the Country Office and field projects.
Liaise closely with the Tanzanian government to ensure excellent WCS-GoT relations.
Participate in strategic planning for the WCS-Tz Program.
Oversee the development of new projects including the drafting of grant proposals, plans, reports and project documents.
Provide key technical support to Project Directors, including on compliance issues.
Work with Project Directors, Operations Manager and Financial Manager to ensure compliance with all requirements in the execution and reporting of grants, and effective support to field projects.
Co-ordinate with Communications to ensure conservation messages are being delivered locally, nationally and internationally.
• Represent WCS at meetings on national and international levels, as requested by the WCS-Tz Country Director and maintain and develop good relationships with national and international NGO and technical partners.


Key Qualifications :
Minimum of a Masters Degree in enviornment, conservation, wildlife or natural resource management or other relevant subject.
At least 10 years relevant work experience, with personal knowledge of NGO management and Issues, and field projects a distinct
advantage.
Substantial experience in large project or program management, personnel management, administration and fundraising.
Detailed knowledge of conservation biology, practical conservation, African and Tanzanian conservation issues.
Demonstrable and passionate commitment to African conservation and genuine enthusiasm about career development in
conservation management.
Excellent planning, communication, reporting and organisational skills.
A very high level of integrity, honesty and responsibility.
Excellent, fluent spoken and written English and KiSwahili.
